PARACAS
The Paracas Peninsula, located within the Paracas District of the Pisco Province in the Ica Region, on the south coast of Peru, is a desert peninsula largely residing within the boundaries of the Paracas National Reservation. However, a segment on the north face maintains a shipping port where deeper water permits larger transport and cruise ships access to the Paracas National Reservation while protected against ocean waves and currents.
Paracas bay, with its southern end lying within the Paracas National Reservation is well-known for its abundant wildlife. The unique ecosystem, insulated from thrashing ocean waves and current by Paracas Peninsula, and its shallow warmer waters, stimulates a remarkable growth of seaweed for which much of the wildlife, particularly the birds of Paracas, thrive upon directly or indirectly.
The bay appears as the gateway to Paracas National Reserve, its warmer shallow waters foster wildlife and many nautical sports, and its calm shoreline protects the municipality of Paracas and the various cottages and hotels that have sprung up in the last few years. As of recent years, the bay has hosted many sailors on catamarans and kitesurfers seeking the flat water and strong wind found in the bay.
The sole road that accesses this port by land through the Paracas National Reservation also supports access to Paracas Museum which holds several ancient artifacts from the Paracas Culture and detailed information about the flora and fauna native to the Paracas National Reservation including birds of Paracas.
This unusual peninsula also bears the famous Paracas Candelabra, a geoglyph with still unknown but many speculated origins.
